photo of a beach Beaches on the island of Rhodes
Rhodes can be proud of its shores. This year the island won a record 29 European Blue Flags (3 more than in 1995), for beaches selected for their cleanliness & organized infrastructure, making it the region with the cleanest beaches in the European Union. The cherished flags, which are only awarded to organized beaches equipped to deal with large numbers of bathers, will now fly at the following beaches:
City/Psaropoula:Kanari Beach Greece won a total of 311 flags this year, second only to Spain’s 329, followed by France (271), Italy (219), Denmark (171), Portugal (114), Eire (39), Great Britain (31), Belgium, (9), Germany (), Sweden (1), Holland (0), and Cyprus (11). Moreover, it was recently announced that Greece has the cleanest bathing water in the EU. Of the 1,526 Greek beaches monitored in 1995 for bathing water quality, 98% were found to have sea water of a «good» standard and 95.6% achieved the highest standards possible.

The west coast of Rhodes is subject to shore winds and can be rough, but is a windsurfer’s paradise. The east coast is more sheltered with moderate winds. In this part you will find the best beaches of the island. Kalithea with its marvelous landscape attracts the younger people. Faliraki beach slopes gently (which is perfect for children) and virtually every water sport is available. A small bay at the extreme southern end of Faliraki is popular with nudists although, strictly speaking, nudism is illegal. Afandou is a fabulous long pebbly beach, busy at weekends, but deserted at the start/end of season. Tsambika, is for many the preffered beach with its long sandy coast. A long, deserted beach runs from Haraki and Vlicha Bay. From Pefkos starts an almost uninterrupted beach with fabulous spots like Glistra, Kiotari, Gennadi, Plimiri and finally Prassonissi at the extreme southwest end of the island.
Scuba diving is a popular activity on Rhodes - although it is strictly prohibited unless accompanied by a recognized diving school - and only in designated areas. This is due to the abundance of antiquities in the waters around the island. You are strongly advised not to remove anything from the sea-bed. The authorities are extremely sensitive about this and prison sentences are routinely handed out for infringements. Snorkeling is permitted anywhere.
