Camiros with Ialissos and Lindos was one of the three major Doric cities that united in the 5th century B.C. to found the powerful city-state of Rhodes. It is often compared to Pompeii although it was not buried by a volcanic eruption but rather simply abandoned and forgotten. It was excavated by archaeologists from 1929 till the end of World War II.
