Giorgos Sikeliotis (1917-1984)Giorgos Sikeliotis (1917-1984), another student of Parthenis, but one who was also strongly influenced by popular art (that of Karayozis or the popular decorative style). He reaches maturity in the post-war period and produces significant works, some of which are to be found in the Municipal Art Gallery of Rhodes. In both Motherhood and Couple in Love, we see the personal way in which he reconstructs the points of departure into his own individual art form. The frontal treatment of forms stems from the knowledge he had of popular art and Byzantine design. We also note the discreet use of experience he acquired in the abstract movement. |
