The painters of the collection

With the sole exception of the painting by Yiallinas, the works in the Municipal Art Gallery of Rhodes belong to artists who were born after 1863. They cover the clearly defined periods of 1863-1881, 1882-1997, 1898-1909, 1923-1940 and the period up till the present day. The first group contains fifteen artists, the most prominent of which are undoubtedly K. Maleas, K. Parthenis and Theofilos Hadzimihail. The second of the aforementioned groups includes D. Galanis, G. Gounaropoulos, F. Kontoglou, N. Lytras, G. Bouzianis, S. Papaloukas, the third group approximately forty artists (S. Vassiliou, A. Kontopoulos, N. Nikolaou, N. Hadzikyriakos
-Ghikas
and others), and the fourth about thirty works, including D. Diamantopoulos, N. Engonopoulos, Y. Moralis, Y. Spyropoulos, Y. Tsarouhis and others. The fifth group includes artists born between the wars, with approximately forty works by artists such as Y. Gaitis, N. Kessanlis, P. Tetsis, A. Fassianos, and others. The last group contains relatively fewer works, about ten in number, by artists such as H. Botsoglou, Y. Psychopedis and others.
The works of modern art by 150 Greek artists contained in the Municipal Gallery of Rhodes cover almost all the artists who created the face of Greek art today, and in many cases some of their most important works. There are also works by artists who, without representing the strongest trends of each generation, are still without a doubt among its exponents, either in the exploration of their particular artistic style, or in what they achieved in the realm of shape and form. The sum total of exhibits, an organic entity, makes it possible for the art lover or the are student to see the questions and problems which have occupied Greek artists this century, the solutions they offered to these problems and, in the final analysis, how Greek reality during this period was portrayed.
